win 7 64 bit only detecting 2gb of ram?

#1BonnabinTheDirePosted 5/30/2012 9:46:56 PM
i have 4gb, under "performance" through ctrl-alt-del it says it's only detecting 2046mb, but under dxdiag it detects 4gb. so is it using 4gb or is something messing up?

Are you looking at "Total" or "Available" RAM? The total should of course show all your installed RAM.

DXDIAG may be listing your graphics card VRAM + system RAM. What does the system info window (right-click computer->properties) say? If that's only showing 2GB, I'd try reseating the RAM or using a different set of DIMM slots for the RAM modules.

Reseat your sticks, then check your BIOS to see if your motherboard detects them.

Probably won't matter but are your sticks in the proper slots? I've seen a handful of motherboards, usually in prebuilt PCs, that require your sticks to go in certain slots for all of them to be detected. For example, if you have four slots (we'll call them DIMM 1, 2, 3, and 4), your motherboard may require that two sticks go in DIMMs 1 and 3 to recognize both, and not DIMMs 1 and 2 or 1 and 4.
