Current set up

I5 2500 k
Sli GTX 580s
P8p67 deluxe
Corsai hx 850

I want to get a physx card. I have access to a free GT 240, will that be good enough for a games like metro?
My other option is a GTX 550ti but I'll have to pay for that and I worry about whether my pus will be adequate.

Just to mention, the only pic e slot I have is x4

With SLI 580s why bother?

Because it would be free and I play at 5760 x 1080 resolution.

The PSU can handle either card easily.

No, it will be 2 580s plus a 240.. on a 850.. thats quite a bit.. especially with the 2500k if its overclocked, still pulls quite a bit of juice

I take that back, I ran his system thru psucalc final

Gave him 4 case fans, a 40% overclock on the 2500k, no overclock on the video cards, 1 optical, 1 hd and no ssd..

came out to 780watts

Of course nothing other than an overclock on the gpus will make you need more.. It'll be pushing it.. It's a corsair, but its only their hx line.. lower tier so it'll be pushing it to run like that for awhile..

I have a 240 and tried it as an physx slave and it barely improved performance. 260 or higher is recommend for modern physx implementations.

No, it's not pushing it. Good PSUs should and can run at 100% load 24/7 without issue. You lose a bit of efficiency but you're not "pushing it" if you're using it within the limits set forth by the label on the side. Regardless this setup would not come close to 100% load, nor would be it 24/7. There is no issue.
