how should I keep my laptop cool?

I just purchased a Alienware m17x4, I have a USB fan but my room gets pretty hot in summer, at the store they had one on a fan and it was warm to touch and that was without playing anything.

I don't have the know how to mod it so is a USB fan enough or is there something else I need?

I saw some laptop cooling fan board right in the front of Walgreen's the other day. I think it was $29.99 or something like that. I had an Alienware M17 and they have a lot of fans in them. It never had a problem from overheating, but it was hot to the touch. So a simple area fan might be good for that.

Man those things are heavy. It seemed to have two of everything inside.

Do you mean hot as in the bottom towards the back? The CPU and GPU are there so it's normal for that area to be hot. Use a program like HWMonitor to check the temps. If they're okay, which they should be, then you don't have to worry.

oh so the laptop being hot doesn't damage it? how do I know when hot is too hot or when it's overheating? just do that hw thing?

If it overheats to a dangerous level it will probably shut itself down.

The cpu should throttle itself before damage occurs, don't know about the gpu.
