Could someone recommend me a good high-end laptop for college purposes?

#1aquablackPosted 6/2/2012 6:08:02 AM
I'm an architecture student and I'm looking for a good high-end laptop for use with Computer-Aided Design (Autodesk CAD) as well as good gaming capabilities and if possible, one that isn't too bulky.

Budget isn't really an issue for me, the problem is choosing a good laptop that would last me up to five years. Also, no macs (can't stand those things, not to mention they have limited CAD functionality, or so I've heard).

You're better off getting a slightly cheaper laptop and saving the money to upgrade halfway through. No laptop is going to last you 5 years very well.

OP look into the Asus G series. They're upto G75 I think? Very good gaming powerhouse laptops, they release a new model every year priced at 1000-1200$, but they'll last 2 years at least before getting a little outdated.

I'm typing from a G72 right now I bought 3 years ago and it runs most of the stuff out today on medium-high still.

The correct answer is a hp dv6t with i7-3610QM and 650m dedicated graphics. Can be had from HP's website for only $850 using the coupon code NBW9325.

Get a Lenovo ThinkPad W series or an HP EliteBook Mobile Workstation.

^ I was actually leaning towards the HP Elitebook Mobile Workstation line, so that's something I'll be looking into more.

Another option for me is to get a Dell XPS 15z which my dad said he could get at a much lower price. I'm also kind of digging the sleek design.

Decisions, decisions.

You're not going to get the same quality out of a Dell XPS than out of an HP EliteBook or Lenovo ThinkPad. Those two are built like tanks and they're standards for lots of companies.

Getting a mobile workstation computer for architecture in college is pointless. Just get a cheaper computer with decent specs and upgrade after 2 or 3 years.
