Thinking of building my own gaming PC

#1lomo69Posted 6/2/2012 12:13:18 PM
Hi guys,

I've decided I want build myself a gaming PC, and I've come up with the following parts. I'm a complete newbie at this, so I'd appreciate any suggestions and/or tips;

http://www.novatech.co.uk/products/components/processors/intel3rdgencorei3,i5andi71155socket/bx80637i53550.html

http://www.novatech.co.uk/products/components/motherboards/intel1155z77chipsetmotherboards/p8z77-vpro.html

http://www.novatech.co.uk/products/components/atiradeongraphicscards/amdhd6870series/11179-17-21g.html

http://www.novatech.co.uk/products/components/memory-pc/ddr3-pc3-12800/1600mhz/cmz8gx3m2a1600c9r.html

http://www.novatech.co.uk/products/components/harddrives-internal/solidstate/upto128gb/mz-7pc064deu.html

http://www.novatech.co.uk/products/components/harddrives-internal/sata500gbto1tb/wd5000aakx.html

http://www.novatech.co.uk/products/components/powersupplies/cmpsu-650txv2uk.html

As you can see, I've not decided on a case yet, so any suggestions on that would be much appreciated. I don't really want to spend much more than 800, but may splash out a little extra if it's going to make a big difference.

Cheers guys!

Recently built a very similar build myself, I'd suggest swapping the i5 3550 for an i5 3570k though. The cost is only an extra 10 so it shouldn't hurt your budget too much.

In terms of a case, I got an NZXT Phantom for ~100, great case with lots of space, good cable management etc. but it obviously depends on what sort of style you like.

I'd also say to look around at other websites. eBuyer, CCLOnline, Scan, Overclockers, Dabs etc. are other good choices in the UK. 99% of my build came from eBuyer/CCL as they were the cheapest apart from the GPU which I got from Amazon. Exact same GPU by the way, so may want to check there.

Great, thanks for your help and advice.

I do intend to shop around for the parts, I just used that site to browse for parts.

Thanks

that motherboard is overkill and pointlessly expensive. it's eating up good money that can make a real impact on your build. the 6870 is nice, but you can afford to do better on that budget. I have a saved cart with an unlocked cpu, HD7850, same psu, Z77 mobo, 500gb hard drive, 8 gb ram, case, dvd drive and a cpu cooler for 624.57. that's everything, including a case. that's a great price for that SSD btw. there are many solid case options out there. first, I'd start over with a different cpu, gpu and motherboard.

60secondassassin, could you suggest a motherboard and gpu? In terms of performance, I'm looking to be able to play the latest games (diabolo 3) comfortably, but not really at super high end settings, and maybe look at some emulation so I can play all my old n64 games.

I'm also not fussed about having a dvd drive at the moment, as I'll get most games off steam.

Thanks

sure. are you going with the i5 3570K like davevalkass suggested?

GPU: http://www.scan.co.uk/products/2gb-xfx-radeon-hd-7850-core-edition-4800mhz-gddr5-28nm-gpu-860mhz-1024-cores-dual-link-dvi-i-hdmi-2x

with the 3570k, gtx670 and the P8Z77-V motherboard (most expensive mobo and gpu I posted) and a cpu cooler the cart i made on scan comes to 789.25 inc VAT. I'd suggest going with the gigabyte UD3H though. the Asus is nice, but not needed.

thanks 60secondassassin, I think I'll go with the i5 3570k, the gigabyte mobo, and probably the r7850, just because it's a lot cheaper. One last question, would this case work?

http://www.novatech.co.uk/products/components/cases/cases/815671010520.html

The website says it's a little smaller than usual, just want to make sure everything will fit ok and won't overheat.

I know I'm asking a lot of questions, but this will be the first time I've ever built or installed any hardware in a PC, so i just want to make sure my plan is ok before I spend loads of money.

Thanks

you're welcome and yes, that is a good mid tower case. be sure to get a cpu cooler. the coolermaste hyper 212 evo and hyper 412S are well priced so look for one of those.
