those kits are a gross waste of money, but 24gb of ram can have it's uses. not in a gaming build though.

You're basically paying for the cooler, because you can buy 2 of these and you'll have 32gb

Actually, you're paying for the quality of the memory.
10-10-10-27 on DDR1600? Yeesh. Even if it's 1.5v over 1.6v, the 7-8-7-24 is much more impressive.

The $500 ones are probably legacy products.
That said, that kit is sexy and I want it sooo bad. My 1600s can't handle 8-8-8, much less 7-8-8 :(

6-7-6-8 at what speed, though?

It does improve memory latency, but much like memory speed, it's not going to make much difference in practical use right now.
