670 can easily be overclocked to excel past the 680 in performance

This would only be valid if the 680 couldn't be overclocked. Most cards can be overclocked to on par or better than the stock version of the model above them when exclude the flagship models.

It's worth it if you want the best! Performance/price ratio the 8 will almost never be worth it over the 7. The 680 is for those who absolutely want the best. It's more worthwhile for gaming than say a 2600k is over a 2500k.

The Asus DCUII TOP Edition actually performs about 1% better than the 680, for a cheaper price.
