Umm, what....? GTA IV's cutscenes are real-time animated, right?

Someone is trying to convince me that the cut scenes in GTAIV are actually very high quality videos. I told him that's the dumbest **** I've heard, but now even I am skeptical.

R* prides themselves on real-time cutscenes. ALL their trailers have stuck on the end of them: "All real-time in-game footage".

I love real time cutscenes. I hate in games when the cutscenes are some crazy good CGI stuff then the game looks like crap. (not necessarily crap, but not as good.)

This is one thing I LOVE about R* games. I really get into the story and into the game because you never hit that graphics down point that distracts you.

the only games I can really deal with the CGI stuff and not mind so much is JRPGs.

It was kinda funny, playing through God of War I had the opposite problem. On the PS3 version the cutscenes are still the original files, so they're washed out and uber low res compared to the actual game.
Steam sales. There are at least 9 every week, including mid week madness and weekend deals.

Most games video based cinematic cutscenes are usually very easily spotted even on current gen consoles, they usually have that same hazy washed out compression effect usually due to video encoded compressed format like MPEG4.

In-game rendered cutscenes are of much higher quality usually at the expense of capacity and the extra processing power required to renders those scenes in real-time, using their own in-game proprietor engine. And I'm very certain majority scenes of every GTA games since GTA3 are rendered using their own in-game engine.

I hate pre-rendered cutscenes, honestly. There are a FEW cases where they look better than the game, but oh-to-often they end up being washed out, low resolution (Ie, 720p to go in line with the console cutscenes) videos that look far, far worse than the game itself. It's noticeable on consoles, but even worse on PC where the graphics difference is even bigger.

Real-time cutscenes doesn't necessarily mean in-game cutscenes, which explains the clothing changes. But yea, it's all rendered in the engine. Most modern game engines can do some high quality, "cinematic", real-time rendering.
