Just got Spore for free

From Origin (WTF?!).

I remember this game getting bashed by the critics, but what was so bad about it? Seems like a neat concept. Is there not a lot to do or something?

People expected some incredible evolution simulator and instead got a boring space spice trading simulator with a four hour dull minigames as an introduction.

I believe it also had always on DRM at launch too, but that was years ago so I can't remember.

I really regret buying the collectors edition the day it came out. I suggest playing anything else rather than Spore.

Origin will detect most games from your Steam account and add them automatically if you have them installed.

Not really, no. There are unlocks in the first 2 stages of the game, but they mean nothing when you reach the third stage, then when you get to space you just build a ship that looks nice or, like me, find one you like on the spore database and go start trading spice and conquering star systems. Personally, I'd recommend Space Pirates and Zombies for the space parts and either Civ 3 or Age of Epires 2, to replace the world parts.

The problem with Spore is that there was a *ton* of hype before release, and a lot of people bought into it, which they shouldn't have. The game didn't live up to the huge hype it got, which made a lot of people bitter. That's where the bulk of the hate started.

Really, as a casual creative game, it wasn't bad at all.

There was a really cool demo, then basically everything in that got scrapped and they went with something very half-assed.

The only thing I remember from that game were the endless pen15 monsters that people created. And boy were they endless.
