i was thinking of getting a sound card for the digital out connection

I was thinking of this so I could hook up my x41 turtle beach headset. Would this work? Should i also up grade to a TB x400? Can I use the mic as well with this hook up? I really don't care too much about the mic though.

I have some x41's hooked up via optical. They work well. Mic is a pain to use but its possible to just run a wire to your mic input via a 2.5-1.5mm converter.

Your optical hook up is through your sound card right?

yeah its the old pc style optical. Have an xtreme gamer soundcard from years ago that still works great.

The x41's leave a lot to be desired as far as sound quality goes. I'm not sure how good the 400's are but if you have the money for new headphones, do some research :)

FYI Sound card optical out is only 2.1

While I may not agree with your opinion, I will defend to the death your right to have it.

Not true at all. You just need an encoder. I have dolby digital live which allows for full 5.1 optical.
