Tried setting up Sharepoint 2010 server on my DC (VM), half a day later realise that standalone isn't supported on an AD DC :(

Yeah... that would be a problem. You must have thought enterprise software got real cheap.

Lol. I don't really have much experience with the backend of sharepoint. Only really the permissions and creating new team sites. It's a learning experience.
That's the great thing about ESXi - I can do all this on the one physical machine.

Even though I realize it's convenient... in case you're messing around with server software just to learn it and get some experience for career purposes, make it a habit not to use a DC for anything but AD DS and supporting services.
