Upgrading from a Phenom 9600.

I currently only have $300 to upgrade my cpu, processor and ram. If I go with that it will be a total of $228 (with tax) with all of that which gives me room to buy a new case(mine is crap). Is it a good upgrade or do you masters recommend something better at my current budget?

Graphics card is 4890HD, PSU is 650 Antec Earthwatts.

i3

This. For $300, you could get an i3-2120, motherboard, and ram.

Nice! I don't know anything intel (using AMD because $$) But yeah read some reviews and that is a way better choice for the price/performance! Thanks dude!

No problem. In the gaming realm, Intel really beats AMD at every price point. The Phenom II would have been fine, but only if your budget was something like $100 tops.

I prefer phenom II BE to save money and overclock for same performance. I also prefer four cores over two.

is your current mobo compatible with the 965BE? if so get the 965BE, it still excellent and you are more likely gpu bottlenecked for the coming years anyways

its not so much the performance vs the i3, than that you get a better platform for going intel at this time

Nope I checked and my motherboard version is not compatible(but newer versions of my mb are). I have the same thinking about four cores though now I'm indecisive. For the gpu I have my piggy ready after I upgrade the cpu, cause the 9600 is really really crappy.

Its purely a money thing. If you can afford it, upgrade your mobo and go intel. If you wanna just upgrade yourr cpu amd save some cash, get the phenom. if you were starting from scratch, nowadays intel is sorta the better choice.. But again 965BE can be overclocked to 4ghz so easily. On my phone srry for grammar.
