What game is this?

I'm trying to remember the name of a game that I played as a kid. This would be in the mid to late 90s. It's a strategy game with a medieval setting. It has a big map and you choose what territories to move your armies to total war style and then a battle starts that you have direct control over. I'm not 100% sure but I think the battles were more like Age of Empires or StarCraft than Total War as in you controlled individual units rather than a big group being one selection. I don't remember very much more about it besides that you could have castles and you could dump oil onto attacking units. Also when you trained units it actually showed them being trained it zoomed inside the building and showed them putting on armor or something I can't remember specifically.

It's only vaguely like it, but maybe you're thinking of the Heroes series?

(It's turn based though, so probably not.)

That would be Rise of Nations, I think.

It's not Rise of Nations that came out in 2003. It also looks different to me in the game I am thinking of there was no real base building you just moved your army around while on a big total war style map and then only had directly control for battles. Also the training thing is really important and it really stands out in my memory. Like every time you made a military unit you got a short cutscene that zoomed inside the building.
