Can someone please explain how to tell the power of intel CPUs?

I'm sorry, that question is very ambiguous and makes me sound like a computer illiterate. I am looking to find the most powerful CPU fiscally possible. How do I judge the power of the i3 v i5 v i7, and also the sandybridge v ivybridges? Could someone shed some light on this please?

It's hard really.

Generally speaking

i3 = Dual core with HT
i5 = Quad core
i7 = quad core with HT.

Although some low end i5s are just overclocked i3s.

Sandy and Ivy are the same architecture. Ivy is something like 5% faster clock for clock.
Ivy is more power efficient and all the CPUs have faster onboard GPUs.

Best bet is post your CPU budget and myself or someone else will help you!

sandybridge is 32nm design, intel hd 3000 graphics (often refereed to as gen 2)
ivy bridge is 22nm design, intel hd 4000 graphics (often refereed to as gen 3)

both chips are 1155 sockets

i3 is dual core
i5 is quad core (no hyper threading)
i7 is quad core with hyper threading

i3 laptops are dual core
i5 laptops are faster dual core, some models offer quad
i7 laptops are quad core with hyper threading

i think it's nice

if you want the best desktop cpu that would be the i7 3770k

you need a z77 mobo (or updated z68 gen3)

This is wrong. There are no quad-core mobile i5s, and there are dual-core mobile i7s.

Thanks for the replies! I don't have a CPU budget, to be honest, rather I have around 2.4k to split between a new laptop for college, and upgrading my desktop that will be staying in my dorm with me. So what do you guys think?

Get an ultrabook and a desktop. Spend no more than $1000 on the ultrabook.
