I had someone tell me the i7 3770k was the best desktop CPU, someone else telling me its the i7 3980X? What should I get? I'd rather not be wasteful of money if I can help it, so I guess the rule of marginal utility should have some application here. If spending a decent chunk of change more won't give me an equally decent increase in performance, I will have to weigh the options. =

If you don't want to waste money the i5 3570k will suffice.

the most powerful CPU fiscally possible?

The i7 3960X

Ever look at server CPU's?

Same as the 3960X, but with the last 2 cores.

What will you be using each computer for? If the desktop is mainly for gaming, go with an i5, as the benefits from the i7 go unused by the vast majority of games

No one wants to spend an entire PC budget on a processor.

the most powerful CPU fiscally possible?

A $2,000 CPU should be ruled out.

Even some heavily multi threaded apps don't show much performance increase going from quad core i5 to quad core 8 threaded i7. The performance increase can sometimes be attributed to the slightly higher stock clockspeed of the i7 and the increase in cache.

Worth it? Does it get much better than that in terms of power?

For gaming PCs that is literally the highest quality s*** you can buy, there is no possible upgrade at the moment, and in some ways, that particular item is even a little overkill, you can save a about $100 by downgrading the CPU and suffer only a minuscule drop in performance.

Ya, but if you can afford it just get it. =] Sure the extra performance isn't worth it to most people, but judging by your topic you seem much like myself in that you want the best. People here will continuously try to sway you into saving money... "here just get this one, its cheaper but its also not quite as good"

Wtf if you say you want the best why do they insist on suggesting slightly lower than the best? lol.
