USB ports on desktop not working! Please help!

#1strongo9Posted 7/30/2012 12:20:30 PM
All of the USB ports on my desktop randomly stopped working. My mouse, flash drives, etc. won't work. There's still electricity coming out of them because I can charge my iPod with them. What could the problem be? Currently I am using my iPod to type this and can only navigate my computer with my keyboard. What could I do to fix this? My OS is Vista if that matters. Please help me!

Have you checked device manager?

And what would that do? When I look at the USB controllers properties in device manager I see nothing. There is only a general tab and all that says is USB controllers and nothing else. How can I fix this?

Did you build your computer or buy a name brand (Dell, HP, ...)? If it's a name brand it might be faster to call the manufacturer

It's an old Gateway desktop that's a few years old. I would like to fix this myself if it's possible.

I haven't had any experience calling Gateway support in a few years, but it might hurt to try calling. At least why you're waiting for someone to help you here. And gateway might be able to tell you how to fix it without having to send it in or anything

I had a I845 board once that liked to shut off the mobo USB ports for the front.
The fix was to set it to 1.1 legacy mode in the bios, reboot then set it back to 2.0.
It did this at totaly random intervals but always from a cold boot very annoying.
It wouldn't just stop working if it already was working for that day, or from a warm reboot.
