minor damage to cpu

#1kjs7Posted 7/31/2012 4:21:42 PM
Today a small part broke off of my 670. Like, very small. However I have no idea what this piece actually does and the GPU still works normally at least for the hour I got to test it. Heres a picture:

Now, I'm just wondering a) what this piece does/what effect it will have if any, and b) if I should just get a replacement since its still under Amazon's warranty to be sure. I'm sure someone more knowledgeable than myself should be able to chime in here....

That's a surface mounted resistor.

It likely won't work without it.

the GPU still works normally

some part of it will have slightly messed up voltage, it may never matter, or it may die tomorrow

Or it may explode.

I'm hoping it explodes.

or overclocking athlons?

it works on various gpus as well
using a number 2 graphite pencil, draw a heavy pencil mark between the two contacts, and it will act as a conductor.

That sounds very fascinating, never heard of it! But wouldn't that be a poor substitute, since a resistor is supposed to be making contact for the circuit, and a change in voltage could blow a capacitor down the line?
