JRPGs for PC?

#1LetumUniversalPosted 8/3/2012 8:37:58 PM
Hey, I see most of the topics in this forum are about hardware. I don't see much conversation about actual games here. So I apologize if I'm in the wrong place, but I do have a PC gaming related question.

I was wondering if anyone was familiar with JRPGs for the PC. I'm a really big fan of the simple turn based combat and strategy. The problem is I've played just about everything for the NES, SNES, and GBA. I'm looking for games that are similar to the classics like the first 6 Final Fantasies, Chrono Trigger, Earthbound, games like that. Bonus if there is depth to the combat, such as difficult boss AI or a job system like FFV and if it's sprite based.

Thanks!

The new Penny Arcade game may be exactly what you're looking for.

Look into the Rance series, specifically Sengoku Rance.....

There are many other good eroge RPG's too.....

You know why they call it an Xbox 360
When you look at it, you turn 360 degrees and walk away.

Grandia II, I guess. Not sure how well it runs on modern systems. You'd have to put up with the obnoxious characters, too.

Nah man, we talk about everything in PCH ;)

You won't find a lot of JRPGs on Windows, I'm afraid. Try searching for video of some or all of the following on Youtube:

Ys: Origin
Ys: the Oath in Felghana
The Last Remnant
Recettear

Other than that you can also emulate platforms that have an abundance of JRPGs. The Super Nintendo (bsnes), Playstation (ePSXe), PS2 (PCSX2), and Gamecube/Wii (Dolphin) all have great emulators. It's only legal if you rip backups of you own games, though (that is easy for PSone and PS2 games.)

Also, there are native DirectX ports of Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy VIII. They are almost impossible to find nowadays, and crazy expensive when you do. If you can though, you'll find tons of updated textures, fixes and other mods at qhimm.com so that's something.

I never realized that we had that many desperately whiny PC JRPG request threads...

Also if you liked Earthbound TC, maybe you've heard of a fangame I'm keeping an eye on. It hasn't released yet, but promises to be awesome:

If you like the Mario RPGs, this is pretty much the most awesome thing ever. A hilarious send-up of both melodramatic JRPGs and the gaming community itself, with solid "Timed Hits" style battle mechanics.
