Did John Romero ever do anything of value after leaving id?

Wikipedia says he had something to do with the first Red Faction game.
Even still it has been over 10 years since he has done anything really note worthy.

He's like a child actor.
I like his past work but his time has passed and the world has moved on.

Without him there wouldn't have been Ion Storm. Without Ion Storm, there wouldn't have been Deus Ex. Think about it.

Seriously Romero isn't even the technical type compared to Carmack not even close. He was more of a marketing and PR personnel and probably some level design artist and a very poor game designer at that. As a sales person the guy would probably stand out but as a game programmer or designer that guys is leagues below compared to even some of the "celebrity veterans" in the industry.

Romero can actually code, and by all accounts was actually proficient early on. He probably can't anymore and is going for easy money in the mobile market.

He suffered because of the fact that Carmack is just a complete and utter genius and got lazy. Also Carmack is a bit lacking in pizazz and Romero was a flashy guy. It worked. I'd still love to see them work together.

he was programming military mainframes as a kid, so while not as technically proficient as Carmack, i'm sure he's over and above you.

Yeah because programming for military mainframes and your own games that got published and sold(which is one of the reasons that wolf 3d and doom turned out how they did, he made the level editors) isnt technical at all.

He's making Facebook games now; I'm sure he is doing fine for money anyway.

He also invented deathmatch.

I mean the guy's a joke in the last decade or so, but let's not kid ourselves, prior to bankrupting Ion Storm and turning out mobile phone crud, the guy was a champ.

you see this alot, not that Romero's my hero, far from it, but so many coders of seminal games that i admired as a kid have... well, they're a joke now.

i guess this is what women do to you. lol

Agreed, may be nothing now but where would we be today without him?

Carmack is actually my programming hero(grew up about 30 minuted from where he did, and used to watch his dad on channel 9 news every night even before I knew who they really were) and even he is but a shadow of what he used to be.
