wanted to upgrade a few times over the last year but never had the cash till now. i honestly just wanna play skyrim with a good amount of graphics mods and maybe a few more games on my steam list at good quality. budget is 400 bucks with the ssd mentioned below included
specs:
cpu: phenom II x4 965 not overclocked
psu: tx 650
gpu: 4890
mobo: m5a97
ram: 4gb ddr3
case: antec two hundred

now i am getting a ssd with my upgrade and i do have a question. my current main windows drive, will i have to wipe it or will installing windows again on the ssd just make that the main windows drive?

Well, everything? That CPU is ancient and so is the GPU. With that budget and an SSD, you can get like one decent part and whatever you get will seriously bottleneck everything else you have right now. And yes, you need to do a fresh install of Windows on the new SSD, meaning you pretty much have to format everything.

For an SSD? The standard around here is the Samsung 840 Pro.

Any recs to upgrade to

7870 or a 660 depending on your preference between AMD and Nvidia. You're CPU isn't awesome but it's fine with these cards.

Would be a significant boost and it's one of the most cost effective cards you can buy.

Good card at a good price. You'll be able to play a lot of games on high setting with this card and your current set up.
