Sure, you think it is just one more button, but it is common to use over 20 key as it is on the keyboard, and that is for fairly simple shooters.
All of the easy to access buttons are pretty much spoken for with standard actions on the keyboard and mouse.
People are going to need either 20+ button mice or they're going to need to move common actions to keys that require them to take their hands of WASD.

An exceedling better mechanic would be to look left and right but still have crosshair in perceivable sight.

Still, I wouldn't be a fondly fan in admiration of said mechanic.

After playing Arma II/Dayz I find myself trying to "alt look" sometimes in other games. It is a great feature.
