Trouble With Yuri's Revenge on Windows 7

#1Dirk_McHardpeckPosted 7/31/2013 1:04:11 PM
Has anyone gotten Command & Conquers Yuri's Revenge to play on a Windows 7 machine?

First it was giving me a pop up saying:
***FATAL*** String manager failed to initialized properly

So I started messing with the compatibility tab for the .exe file and the only way I got past the pop up error was the set it to Windows 2000 and disable the desktop composition, visual themes and display scaling.

But it still doesn't run correctly. You can't see the opening animation. You can only hear it. And the menu buttons don't redraw as you click on them. So, for example, if you click "new game" then you should be presented with types of games. But you don't. you can hear the audio of the menu options changing and you can click where the button should be and it works like it's there but there's nothing there. It's like the animations don't function at all for anything. I've found that the only way to get the buttons to appear is to hit the "windows button" to minimize the game to the taskbar and when you maximize the game again the buttons are there.

Anyone familiar with this kind of problem with older games?

Did you try limiting the game to 256 colors? In my copy of the original C&C included with the C&C ultimate pack, that option was checked - of course I had to download a fanmade patch for the game to limit the framerate as the scrolling was far too fast. I also had to disable origin-in-game or the sound at the menu would eventually loop endlessly and hardlock the program. I would do some browsing around google as I imagine there's some kind of fan-created remedy for this. Good luck. Also, lol, nice username.

Yes. But it didn't appear to do anything. When the game launched you could see the C&C icon appear for a moment in only 256 colors but then change back to full color. No doubt that's being caused by Windows being... uhg... "helpful".

Yeah I've been scouring the 'net like a mad man looking for some sort of mod or patch. Nothing so far except a standalone version for multiplayer which doesn't help me because I prefer the single player mode.

What's the framerate patch you mentioned? do you still remember where you found it?

Running RA2 in general on W7 is pretty hard. Best you can do is run in all the compatability modes and all.

Can you tell me a little more about what I'm looking at here?

I tried to install what you pointed to in the first link but I get an error saying a required file is missing.

I tried to install what you pointed to in the second link and I get an error saying that the "game was not found in the selected directory". But I'm pointing to the Westwood/RA2 path where the game is most definitely installed.

Are you using the 1.001 patch? If not get it here:

http://commandandconquer.filefront.com/file/;34121

Then try this patch:

http://forums.renegadeprojects.com/showthread.php?tid=572

Now put it in Windows XP SP3 compatibility mode and Run as Administrator. The patches JKatarn listed are for C&C The First Decade and C&C 95.

The second patch doesn't apply because it's for the 64 bit version and I'm running 32 bit
Still getting fatal string error

Finally got it fixed. Hurray!!

For anyone having the same problem here's what happened. There were two problems I was experiencing. The first was the "***FATAL*** String manager failed to initialized properly" popup. That ws fixed simply by launching the game from YURI.exe instead of RA2MD.exe. Didn't even have to change the compatibility options. I have no idea why there are 3 executables to launch 2 games but oh well. The second problem once I got past the first problem was that none of the animations worked, most importantly the menu options. The solution to that was to add a second display in Screen Resolution settings like it shows here:

Definitely the strangest problem I've encountered in a long time.
