Tablet or laptop for basic work/homework/entertainment purposes?

#1sundevilhoops07Posted 8/1/2013 4:53:21 PM
I'm in the market for a tablet or a laptop. I have a desktop but want something I can use while I watch tv and travel. The main purpose for it will be homework and web surfing so I basically just need it to run excel and word, and have a keyboard that's easy to type on.

Don't have a specific price range but I'm looking to stay under $1000 if possible...any suggestions? Which ones do you guys like/dislike?

I'd say wait until Microsoft refreshes the Surface Pro with the Haswell CPU.

I'd stay away from tablets for what you're wanting. Y410 or Y510 are decently priced Haswell laptops with an ok gpu, though depending on what's on sale I've seen Haswell/765m laptops in the $990 range. I saw you said you have a desktop already though so I'm not sure how much of a gpu you actually need.

Not looking for much..like I said, basically just looking for something to read articles/hw assignments online and use excel and word to complete them. Besides that I'm just gonna surf the web and watch netflix.

if you need to use word and excel then I would go with a laptop there are tablet apps which are similar but none of them stand up to heavy use due to missing features etc. if you jsut wanted it for web browsing reading a pdf and watching the odd video I would have said tablet but for any kind of editing your best bet is a laptop as nothing beats a good old fashioned kb/m and ms office.

CPU that provides much better battery life to tablets. Don't even consider a Windows tablet that doesn't have a Haswell CPU.
