I really liked shooters from 1998 to 2006, then they went downhill.
I consider 2000-2003 to be rather slow as far as FPS goes. 90s had the classics, but until Doom 3 and HL2 in 2004, we had a rather slow time as far as good FPS goes. 2004 marked the era of the modern shooter I think. Followed by 2005 with stuff like COD2, FEAR, and Quake 4. Then we had the new consoles, which released a lot of FPS game, ans they kinds became commonplace.
I have no regrets for this, aside from the DLC and microtransactions scams.

Well, I don't know why you think the older ones are too primitive. Technologically you mean? I mean, short of graphics and some old engine quirks, the words primitive are simply lies. Of course they also were not cinematics in any way as well.
Personally I prefer those games you consider too primitive, although my favorite is Unreal. I absolute love Doom, Blood, Heretic, Hexen, Shadow Warrior, Strife...
Thing that bothers me on a personal level is realism. I never, ever, ever cared for "realistic" shooters and I never will. I hate them. Even the good realistic games I will never enjoy. But even besides that, what are FPS nowadays? Dungeon-like level design? Atmosphere? Interesting actions and encounters? Interesting weapon design and gameplay? Nope. All gone.
As for multiplayer, yeah I loved UT back in the days, but I wished for more. There are very few games I thought were awesome. C&C Renegade was the sort of FPS multiplayer evolution I hoped for. Instead now, we get Planetside 2, with absolutely horrid gameplay and zero interesting mechanics. Heck you can't even win, and its just a bloody grind based F2P game. What a pile of crap.
Oh, and while not PC, 2002 had one of the greatest shooter of all time: Metroid Prime. And yes, that does count. God I would die for more FPS games with that sort of depth and design. Absolutely lovely. After all, I never got playing FPS games "just to claim I have crazy aim and kill stuff all day". Heck that game ain't even about aiming.
But thats what you get when FPS is such a broad genre, yet nobody does anything with it but the same thing over and over again.
Oh, and did I mention proper first person fantasy games? (counts as FPS to me, in a way) There are almost none. Elder Scrolls games are so shallow and boring, and have terrible combat. Games like Hexen, where are they?.. Where are those crazy first person adventures? I WANT MORE.
System Shock 2 wasn't really an FPS like the others. Much more RPGish. And survival was extremely important (managing ammo and crap).

Yeah, Hexen is amazing. I still play it sometimes, and I think that its gameplay aged quite well.
Speaking of which, have you ever played a game called Witchaven? While it was a bit rough around the edges, and had too many collision issues, it was a quite fun game. A bit like Hexen, but with more melee weapons, a bow and arrow, and some magic (fireball, fly, etc). I remember that I actually LOVED it, specially after getting used with the slow gameplay. Soon, Witchaven 2 was released, and I bought it instantly! Bored me faster than W1 though...
If you accept Gaben as your true lard and savior, put this on your sig. :)
how can you not mention rainbow six?
I was thinking the same thing.
