Do you use Windows Defender or MSE? If so, do you use real-time protection?

I started noticing my system was acting different for some reason and I noticed the "antimalware service executable" (MsMpEng.exe) running quite a bit which is taking anywhere from 50-70% of my CPU at various times.

I'm tempted to disable the real-time protection but Defender is the only program I have, besides Malewarebytes which I run once a week. I'm usually pretty safe with my browsing and haven't been infected in a few years now.

Stupid question, but have you made sure it's been updated, with all the Windows updates as well?

You sure you weren't in the middle of a scheduled scan?

I use Windows Defender with MSE built in (Windows 8). Real-time protection disabled. I didn't need it and thought it could possibly interfere with some games. I have not regretted disabling it, but then again I don't do stupid things online. I also have Malwarebytes, which I run whenever I get paranoid from reading the "I have a virus somehow" topics (so maybe once every two months).

You'll be fine. Use adblock plus and noscript in your browser. MSE... Malwarebytes once a week... you're good to go.

Not stupid, any question is good. And yeah, it just updated last night actually.

I opened up Defender to see if one was in progress and it wasn't. Last one was this morning when I first turned it on.

I use the Win8 Defender. Sometimes I'll turn it off because it starts scanning whenever I leave my computer for 30 seconds. Seems a little excessive to me. I also get the feeling it cramps up my games.

Real people of the master race don't use virus software because we do not need it.
