I have 4GB of RAM now...should I upgrade to 8, or wait on DDR4?

#1EternalNetherPosted 8/3/2013 5:59:48 AM
At the moment I'm debating between upgrading my RAM, or just saving up and building a new PC even though mine is only 3 years old. I'd planned to give this computer to a family member if I build another.

That being said, if I decide I just want to upgrade my RAM, is it worth it to go on and jump to 8GB now? Or should I wait on DDR4 to come out since that will probably be a more worthwhile upgrade? I'm not sure how big a difference there is, as I only got into building computers when DDR3 was around. Dunno about DDR2 or how much different it was.

Memory speed usually doesn't make a big difference. Check out benchmarks comparing different speeds of DDR3 memory and you'll see that the effect is almost always negligible.

About adding more, the question is do you ever use up all of your 4 GB? If you do then it would probably be worth increasing, but if you never get that high, then the extra memory will do nothing.

I don't really monitor it but I do know that I use up 33% of my RAM just by using the OS and running a few tasks/programs in the background, and that's not including whatever game I happen to be playing. With the next gen consoles coming out I feel like my 4GB isn't going to cut it for very long. Console games have always been more demanding on PC. What requires 4GB there will likely require more here. I wanted to be prepared....but I think I'm just going to save up and build an entirely new computer. My brother needs a PC of his own and can have this one. My 460 is starting to fall behind other GPUs, and if I get DDR4 RAM that's going to require a new Motherboard, might as well get a new CPU while I"m at it. Oh, and my NZXT Phantom is having problems so I kind of need a new case too >.>

It didn't take much input in this topic for you to decide what to do. Well done.

Yeah, it's going to require a new mobo and if you're already not happy with your gpu I'd agree. Just make a new build.

Well, I probably should have made this topic a few days ago. I've been agonizing over this decision for about a week now. Expensive decisions are hard decisions.

New build if you're planning on upgrading soon. Stick in more RAM if you're gonna be keeping it for a year or two. RAM is rather cheap. You can get another 4 GB for $30.

The moment you are using virtual memory, you need more RAM.
