Have you played it before and going back to play it for nostalgia, or are you new to the game? You may want to check out http://morrowind.nexusmods.com/mods/topalltime/?adult=0. Look for some graphic overhaul mods or whatever else suits you.

Played a bit of the Xbox version, but the archaic combat system really didn't make me want to keep playing. Everyone says that Morrowind is the best of the later TES games though and I've always wanted to give it a chance, so I might as well now with it being super cheap and all. Still debating the purchase but thanks for the recommendations!

It's not, it's their nostalgia talking, plus it's "cool" to hate Skyrim. Oblivion is the best mechanically, Morrowind has the most enticing world, and skyrim has the most polish/graphics. I suggest Oblivion, Morrowind IS archaic.

You call it archaic I call it an RPG. These modern ES games are barely an RPG at all. Especially Skyrim. Perks? Really?

Its also the last RPG in the series, before it turned into a hack n' slash game. Personally, I never really liked any of them - Though Morrowind is the only one of the three semi-modern games in the series where they did the guilds justice. Its not like Skyrim, where you show up, do a couple of quests and suddenly you're in charge. You feel you really are moving up through the ranks.

The only mod I really remember using, was a mana regeneration mod. In the base game, it doesn't regenerate, and you have to rely on sleep or potions.

Morrowind Code Patch is recommended by a lot of people, and I have it as well. Fixes a few bugs and makes things generally nicer in the game. For instance, it makes it so rain doesn't fall through physical objects which is my personal favorite part of it. If you didn't like the combat, there are mods somewhere that make it so there is a 100% hit chance. I personally don't have it, but it might make the combat bearable for those who don't like the original combat. As I don't have it, I don't know the name of it so you'll have to do some searching.

The graphics and sound overhaul is hard for me to recommend as I've had some issues with distant buildings/towns with the increased viewing distance. It's probably an issue on my part, but I still can't recommend it for that. Instead, I'd recommend http://elderscrolls.filefront.com/file/;56241 instead. It will make the textures a bit better looking.

Overhaul is best one to get.

Nothing else is really essential.

People praise Morrowind all over this site, however they are hardly ever talking about Vanilla Morrowind. Heavily modded Morrowind isn't even the same game fundamentally.

Morrowind even when it was released was an archaic, aged dinosaur.
