Is this a good laptop for my needs?

I needed a replacement laptop for the mac I used to type documents and stuff for Uni and I was wondering if this would be a good replacement for it and is it a great laptop for playing Civilization V, Crusader Kings II and Europa Universalis IV or any strategy except total war.

Yeah it is a pretty powerful laptop, what I would call entry level gaming. It isn't a full gaming laptop, but I assume the price is nice ( not sure about Aus pricing ).

I will try to look for that. I am not looking for something really uber gaming but I want something where I could use it to store files and type documents for uni and could really run at least CK2 and EU IV with no problems whatsoever and I would count being able to play Civ V especially on those very long games a huge bonus.

As for prices, the other stores I saw are selling crappy ultrabooks and some of them go up to $1500-$2000. I saw the MSI site but unfortunately I can't order direct from them. They only suggested some retailers here.

I wanted a good laptop but I am also torn between spending my $1500 on upgrades for my PC instead.

Do you still need a good portable laptop?

I think its not need but more of a want since I rarely bring it around and I only thought about getting one since I wanted to play it in between classes. The link I posted is the cheapest one I could see that is a bit powerful.

Truth be told, I am torn between upgrading my PC (no immediate reason to other than lets say invest in an SSD for total war and get an easy to open and easy to clean case). I usually play Paradox games and other strategy games (except total war) and the only thing that is stopping me from upgrading my PC is the fact that I don't know what to upgrade and I don't know how to remove each part, clean it and transfer it in a new case.

My main worries of getting the laptop is the battery life and although I know some spots to play and plug it in at uni, I wanted something that has a great battery life for strategy games but sadly I don't think laptops reached a point where I could get a decent play out of its batteries without being plugged in like lets say compared to a vita or 3DS.

Yeah there are no laptops that can last more than 1.5-2.5 hours while gaming.

I would look for something with a higher resolution--1600x900 or 1920x1080. The text size is acceptable at those resolutions when you have a 15.6" screen, and the extra screen real estate is really helpful when working with (I assume text) documents. 1920x1080 is especially good for putting 2 windows side by side.

I remember my old 17 inch HP which I used for a fair bit of time and that thing was heavy. I am trying to find something as small as possible though since I only have 2 days of class and live a bit far from Uni so I don't want to carry something too heavy along with some of my heavy law books.
