What needs to be upgraded on this old gaming rig?

#1xVSaNxPosted 8/4/2013 10:40:20 AM
dell dimension dxp061

nvidia geforce gt 520
4gb of ram
intel pentium d 3.6ghz
500gb hdd
windows vista

that includes the cpu upgrade and I think the slight ram upgrade. what needs to be upgraded so that it can play games without lagging? the main game it is used for is League of Legends, it plays fine in the game it just takes forever to load in and sometimes the framerate will drop. I think the video card has been upgraded once before as well. is it worth it to upgrade some components like the RAM and maybe the video card again or what else or is it better to get a new desktop entirely? I believe an upgrade to windows 7 would help as well, especially if I upgraded to 7 and upgraded to 8gb of ram. I'm hoping the former is the better choice, dell desktops are built nice and upgrading would be preferable.

You could use 4 GB more RAM and a new video card. How much do you want to spend?

only a couple hundred, I would like efficient, reliable, inexpensive and noticeable upgrades if possible. I think with new parts and leaving that crummy vista it will meet all of those expectations. free OS, RAM is inexpensive and yields noticeable differences, and then a graphics card would certainly help, however what would be the biggest upgrade within my price range?

Actually I think Vista can't use 8 GB of RAM so you'll want to stick with 4 unless you get Windows 7 64 bit or Windows 8. For around 200 you'll want to look at getting an HD7870 GHz or 7850 for a little cheaper.

yeah I'm definitely upgrading it to Windows 7, I have a free upgrade for it so once I get hardware in it I'm going to do the upgrade. you don't think buying an expensive new video card would be a waste for it? and what's a good card for $100?

Around 95 after the rebate. It would be a pretty significant upgrade especially being the overclocked GHz version.

With $100 left in his budget a 128 GB ssd from crucial or Samsung run $100 right now on Amazon. That would help with boot times and load times for games+programs.

crucial m4, Samsung 830, Samsung 840 are on sale.

You need to replace everything. The Pentium D is trash nowadays. It was nothing special when it came out, 8 years ago, but now it's just terrible.

Once we perfect building Mechs, I expect there to be a factory in Mexico pumping out a brand call Mechsican. I wanna buy me a Mechsican.

He only has $200 to work with. He never said he wanted a whole new PC. While I agree with you it's not our choice to tell him to build or buy a whole new system.
