13.8 drivers are out. Microstutter, runt frame problems etc. are a thing of the past.

13.8 drivers are better. It's definitely not "a thing of the past", much like the stutter introduced with 12.11.

Even a GTX 690 microstutters if you want to go there. Is it a problem though?

Don't know. Ever since my 4870 I've stayed away from AMD. Such horror.

Weird since that was one of their better series of cards.

Yes, actually. Yes it is. That's why people recommend single card setups.
And SLI is still better than CFX in terms of frame pacing.

I had constant driver failures, a lot of overheating, when I attempted crossfire it was about the equivalent of replacing my GPUs with dog crap. I just really doubt I ever go back.

I've got a single 7970, I monitor frametime in Afterburner and it spikes a lot. I'm on 13.6 beta.

Forgive my naivety, but is that microstuttering? If so, has that been improved upon?

Or are these drivers mainly affecting those with crossfire setups.

Microstutter is typically not measurable in afterburner. It's when you get a high framerate, but it looks like you're getting much less, typically around half of what your framerate reading suggests, because of the particular timing of the frame rendering.
It's entirely a crossfire targeted update.
