Question:- If in future I needed more RAM would it be alright to swap one of those 4GB DIMMs for an 8GB DIMM (of the same make, with the same timings)? My motherboard only has two memory slots.
It should be, yes. That's how computer manufacturers include 6 GB of RAM in dual-channel mode (though with a 2 and 4 instead of 4 and 8).
That said, you shouldn't need more than 8.
I beg to differ. 8GB is often enough but I ahve reach my limit with 8 gig plenty of times on my system by multitasking. I had to close the game I was playing once cause my system ran out of memory... --- We're Americans! We don't quit just because we're wrong. I've got 12 at the moment. I will be receiving my rma'd stick of G Skill Sniper either today or tomorrow. Will definitely feel good to have 16 gigs again. --- i5-2500k,Asrock Extreme 3 Gen 3,2x 1Tb Spinpoint f3,sli EVGA 580 3GB.12gb G Skill Sniper 1600, Seasonic X750,Corsair 600t white,Corsair H100,Ocz Agility 3
I currently have 12GB. My motherboard should only have 8GB Crucial Ballistix Sport. But since I found my old 2x2GB Kingston HyperX, I decided to use those as well. That underclocked my Ballistix to 1333mhz to match the HyperX though. I could overclock it back 1600mhz, but I'm a bit lazy to learn how to properly do so. --- i5 3570K / ASRock Z77 Extreme 4 / Gigabyte HD 6870 / Corsair CX 600V2 / 12GB RAM / Corsair Carbide 400R 1TB WD Black / 500GB Barracuda / 80GB Caviar SE
maybecalls the only game i've played that uses over 2 gigs is L.A Noire. It has used over 4 gigs and the recommended amount of ram for it is 8gb's, --- i5-2500k,Asrock Extreme 3 Gen 3,2x 1Tb Spinpoint f3,sli EVGA 580 3GB.12gb G Skill Sniper 1600, Seasonic X750,Corsair 600t white,Corsair H100,Ocz Agility 3
8gb. I would add more if I could, but it seems to serve me well for gaming so far. I'm not doing any major video rendering or anything that would need a ton of RAM. --- My movie and gaming room: http://imgur.com/a/IjWr1 My pets: http://imgur.com/a/P9VGU
