I picked the parts and build mine from scratch naturally...... if only to sniff the parts as they first emerged from their bags :)

My old gaming computer asploded, so I had to have something else... I went to fry's and gave my budget for a new computer and the guy gave me the motherboard, cpu and ram (i already had the rest from my old computer) and I put it together... there was no option for "Someone else picked the parts out but I put it together" though.

I later upgraded the computer quite a bit but it's basically the same computer from 4 or 5 years ago...

I had to mark "bought a prebuilt," although technically I traded it for a whopping 4x CD-ROM drive. I also bought a second 4x drive to put in the computer I got, so it cost me around $100 for the first computer I ever personally owned. Installed the drive myself. From there on out, I've simply continually upgraded that same machine and never purchased/built a new one, so technically it's the only desktop/tower I've ever owned.

Went into a computer shop last December:

"Hey buddy I got 1k budget, could you give me a good one for gaming"

got the parts list

"Could you bump up this part here and give me an nvidia card instead"

got new parts list and cost went up to 1200 then paid 1200+ to let them assemble it for me because I don't have a clue on what to do.
