Selling PC on Craigslist: scam or not a scam?

#21Devil_wings00Posted 8/5/2013 9:15:17 PM
Check? In 2013? for a craigslist purchase? Avoid like the plague. Unless he's willing to pay you in cold hard cash, I wouldn't bother. Just like buying something on Ebay not through paypal...always fishy. I honestly always prefer to talk to the person on the phone and maybe set up a meeting with the person (make sure you have someone else with you at the meeting) so they can test out the PC etc. and you can get a feel for if they are trying to rip you off.

I got something similar when I put up some shoes for sale. It's a scam.

When it comes to Craigslist, you meet the buyer in person to sell your product. If not, it's 99% a scam. It's kind of the unwritten rule.

I know right. It's like hey $50 with your name on it if you keep it for me oh and I'm a busy person going on a trip tomorrow.. Buy I'd like to buy a gaming pc for my leisure time between flights lol.. And if they wanted it so bad they wouldn't ask for my email as the first response. They'd tell me their interest and to contact them in whichever way.

Should I respond?

Sure, see what kind of hoops you can get him to jump through. Make him write a note on a Dixie plate.

general rule for Craigslist: if the person can't meet you at a local Starbucks so you can exchange goods for cash, it's a scam.

This. Cash only. If you cash a check at your bank and it turns out to be a fake, the bank is gonna stick you for the amount.
