Happyscrub's controversial video game topic

#1happyscrub1Posted 8/6/2013 10:44:39 AM(edited)
"Why do asian made video games always have all white characters?"

Something I always wondered for years but never bother to ask people. I just so happen to see someone asked the question and saw an answer that seemed interesting.

"I really don't mean to offend anybody that is Japanese. Japanese people idolize anybody with very light skin, so in Japanese culture, the lighter you are the more attractive. In addition to that, they also are very interested in the hair color of white people, because they don't have a wide variety of natural hair color's like white people. So they show a preference to girls with blonde and red hair and they draw them and put them in a cartoon."

Because they don't find black people attractive.

Probably because it makes a nice "default" appearance. Besides, isn't "white" a catch-all term for a large amount of races around the world? Spaniards, French, Germans, Russians, Caucasians, etc.

To a certain extent the Japanese do find these different colored hair and eyes exotic, as most people from a traditionally homogenous society would. In addition, from an artistic standpoint, it lets a character stand out more, so it has both utilitarian and aesthetic benefits.

As an aside, I always thought FFX and Advent Children were like the ultimate compromise. Guys like Cloud and Tidus had very Asian looking facial features, but with blonde hair and blue/green eyes.

ITT: People who aren't Asian question the characters of Asian produced games while Asians themselves don't see a problem.
