You need to spend at least $1000.00 US to get something that will run games on medium settings for the next 2-3 years. You can go cheaper but you will drastically reduce the life of the laptop being able to play games. Case in Point. In Aug of 2011 i paid $1200.00 for an ASUS G75 (i7, 1 tb Hdd, 8 GB Ram, Blue-Ray drive,Nvidia 570m GPU) on sale from $1400.00. Today it is pretty much a paper weight when it comes to gaming. It's pretty much useless unless I want to play new games at console settings. There's nothing wrong with gaming laptops as long as you know ahead of time they cost 2-3 times what an equivalent desktop would cost and last half as long.
Basically the rule of thumb for gaming laptops is $1000.00 minimum and that will last you 1-3 years (at best). Every $400 on top of that buys you another year.
