Higher resolution monitor?

You should be fine. I've used monitors in the past with specs lower than that with no real problems. Both extending and mirroring. Look for an Asus monitor so that it matches your laptop. I have 2 Asus monitors and they are nice.

I've read somewhere that an Intel HD 2000 video card doesn't support resolutions higher than 1080p on anything other than DisplayPort ( a connector your laptop doesn't have). I think you would have to settle with a 1080p monitor.
