I want to get my computer to run off a wired connection instead of a wireless connection, but, due to house layout, wiring an ethernet cable from the modem to my computer is not possible. I had thought myself out of luck when I saw this particular kind of part. How well do they generally work?

Pretty well. Go for it. Return it if it doesn't work.

There's a few details like both adapter have to be in the same circuit, but they work fine, is faster than wireless, but slower than LAN.

I used Powerline for the better part of last year. It worked great for me, it's literally plug and play.

If it's not going to work for your purposes, you will know within 5 minutes of hooking it up. If it doesnt work, return it.

Works well for what it does. Really well actually. You wont regret it
My gaming rig: ASUS G73JW: I7 740qm, 8 gigs ddr3, Nvidia Geforce 460m.
I like single player games. Nothing is quite as enjoyable as playing with myself.

Speaking of which, does anyone have any recommendations on what model and/or brand is best? Or what characteristics one should look for?

There's nothing wrong with wireless these days.

There is when it has to go through a few walls and up a floor. Or perhaps I don't have a good enough wireless adapter. Either way, I would prefer the speed and reliability of a wired connection, whatever medium it may be through.
