On Origin or Steam, is it possible...

to trade a game key for a console version of the game? I figured since I already bought the game on PC, it wouldn't matter if I switched it for a console version?

The only case I can think of is in the reverse: If you bought Portal 2 on PS3 you also got the PC version at the same time... buying it on PC doesn't grant you the PS3 version of the game though, and it's not a trade... it's just a bonus.

Maybe one day in the future they'll try to count consoles in on the "Steamplay" (which basically lets you buy a game once for PC or Mac and you also get a copy for the other platform) but if that ever happens, it'll be when digital distribution is the primary means of buying games.

if you have an unactivated key, you can trade it for the disc version, but if you've used the key you can't.

He means you can trade it to someone in exchange for the disc version, I think. To my knowledge there is no direct process that lets you convert a Steam key into a console game...
