Is going from a generic dell keyboard to a gaming mechanical keyboard a huge lea

leap? Will I really notice a difference for both gaming and programming? I'm considering buying one. Any good ones? My limit is $60.

You're going to have to type on one yourself and decide if it is a huge deal for yourself. Anyone who comes in here and says "yes" or "no" is just giving you an opinion. Hopefully you know someone who has one, or can go somewhere and try one. Also, if you'd like to get a feel for each switch, this exists:

Do a little research for yourself (you'll be richer for the experience) and then figure it out. I personally use a mechanical keyboard with Cherry MX Black Switches (finger muscles!) and like it a lot, but my experience is probably different than yours will be and it's not even difficult for me to go on the internet and find troves of people who hate the black switches..

They are definitely a different experience but no one here is going to be able to give you a definitive answer.

A mechanical keyboard will not automatically make you good, or even substantially better, at any particular game.

In terms of a difference, I would have to say that the most pronounced difference I noticed was going back to a rubber-dome after having used a mechanical for a prolonged duration.

edit: I'm also not aware of any decent keyboards within your $60 limit; if you were willing to spend $15 or so more, you might want to look into the Cooler Master Storm QuickFire keyboards.

Yeah bro. Its a huge leap. But you cant get a mechanical keyboard for 60 bucks. Save up 20 more bucks and come back.

For me, someone who plays fighting games on my computer with the keyboard, having a key with at least 6 key rollover was so good. O_O

i went from the worst keyboard microsoft makes to an old generic dell keyboard, it's amazing. old dell keyboards are aweomse. having said that mechanical keyboards feel great, but they're pricy. if you can find one on sale then i'd say buy one.
