Got an old computer laying around? Or enough parts to build a tower for cheaper than $200? You could load those parts up with PFSense and have a hella crazy router that you can upgrade later if you wanted.

Just got the Asus AC66, works great. File transfers to my new Macbook Air are screaming on the 5GHz band, great range and connectivity for every other device in the house.

My only qualm, and this is every router really, is the heat. I touched it the other day to see and it was boiling. I guess this is normal because the room it's in is rather cool, but it operates at an alarming temperature.

I think all wifi devices run hot. I've got a little USB Wireless N card and that thing runs around 110 or so after just a couple minutes of being plugged in.
