How's this idea for a game challenge?

Maybe this has been done before, but I've never heard of it as far as the whole "freemium" type of games go.

It would be a "free-to-play once" game, where you get one life with a registered account and when you die you get permanent game over. If you want to try again you have to pay for another "life." Could be $1 per try. The game would have no save feature, multiple bosses, and a time limit. It would be a third person action game, though you could play in first person if you chose to.

The gameplay would focus around methods to speed through the game, kill all enemies skillfully, and find all the secrets in the game.

First person to beat the game would get $1 million. First person to complete 100% of the game would get $1 million. Every person that beats the game gets a reward, such as the ability to play the sequel :D

I think it sounds like a perfect example of what's wrong with current, as well as emerging gaming trends.

. . . methodical, exacting, and worst of all, patient.

I concur. This sounds like a terrible idea and setting oneself up for massive failure. Oh, and "Beating the game grants you ability to play the sequel"? Why the hell would the even bother making a sequel if they literally limit their audience to people who beat the "Challenge" of their first game?

It wouldn't work. Part of the appeal of freemium games is how casual they are. If you make it hard enough to be profitable yet good enough to keep people playing you've got the perfect game and could charge whatever you wanted for the full version.

That was actually my first thought...Hell, I played through a couple mobile games that gave me like 3 lives and then were like "DOWNLOAD THIS SHOVELWARE OR PAY $$$ TO GET MORE LIVES" (Well, in the form of revive potions, anyway). I whored my phone out once, didn't sign up for anything and uninstalled the apps minutes later after it credited me the crap. >_>

so... a pay to play roguelike?

that's genius. You'd have to start them off with 25 lives or something, then charge $1 for ten more.

Its what we used to call "arcades". Not exactly new.

Always hated that concept.

You want to kill me and stop me from playing for a while on some special MMO where lives are incredibly important, I'd understand the concept. You would not, however, make me pay for every lives.
