I want to also upgrade the CPU as well. What combination of the two would be good? I was thinking HD7990 with an i7-4770K or should I wait for new chips and cards?

Wait. Your stuff isn't that old at all. The performance increase from the CPU will be minimal at best.

I'm not home to check my board, but I'm assuming I'll need to buy a new one right? I'm currently using a 3570K

I'd get a second 7970 Ghz for now, and save up for a completely new build in about one year with an 8-core Haswell-E CPU, DDR4 RAM, and Maxwell (Titan 2 maybe?).

EDIT: Your CPU is fine for another year, and a 7990 is in fact CF. Like I said, you can't max M:LL without a CF/SLI setup.

hmm seems like a plan. I wanted to stay away from Xfire but since 8 core haswell is coming might just chill out for now.

hmm I see. it looks like pretty much two 3GB GPU's slapped together. Might look into that if it's cheaper than Another 7970 GHz (I'll sell my current card if I got a 7990 to make up the difference.)

Wait until next year and see what is out and what you can afford/willing to spend.

Wait until next year. The Maxwell series for Nvidia is suppose to come out that will blow everything out of the water (supposedly). This is just based on rumor. According to this chart, it's going to be leagues ahead of the current GTX 6xx and 7xx series: http://hothardware.com/newsimages/Item14524/gtc_roadmap1.jpg

Or you can grab a 7990 and crossfire that with your 7970...

That's a compute performance per watt chart, and you know that they're always going to try to paint their products in the most positive light.

Also, just changing the scale of the graph can do wonders for the hype mill.
