When I was first introduced to the idea of buying games on Steam...

I was moving into my dorm for my first year of college, and I had decided to become a bit of a PC gamer to avoid having to move my consoles in. I had tons of gift cards saved up to purchase various games with, and I came to the realization that they were all pretty much useless, since all the good outlets for PC games are online and independent of the big stores.

After being in college for a year and purchasing quite a few Steam games as they went on sale, I've started to ignore my gift card pile entirely and think "Oh, dear, all these 3DS games that are coming out won't benefit from Steam Sale prices!".

Gift cards for where? You can buy Steam Wallet funds at a couple of different brick and mortar retailers.

Various chains, like Walmart and so on.

Though I suppose I could just use the gift cards to purchase Steam gift cards. That's an idea.

feel like I might need 'em for the recent 3DS releases, though

I don't think you can use a store's gift card to purchase another gift card. I tried doing that with a Bestbuy gift card and getting a Steam giftcard, they said no.

You can. If they told you no, they were just being ****s.

This. A best buy gift card is the same thing as money (only at bestbuy of course). Whoever told you that was either lying or just misinformed.

If they told him "no" it might be store policy but not the company policy. I've worked at a place where stolen credit cards were "laundered" by having them purchase gift cards and then using the gift card to buy something they could cash out and after enough of that kind of shady behavior the only thing they could do was stop people from using gift cards that way.

Then again, I don't really see the problem with buying a steam card with a gift card since there's no way you can cash it out or refund it.... but again, it might just be store policy and not the company-wide policy.
