Question about headphones

#1daemon_danPosted 8/20/2013 7:57:21 PM
I'm planning to pick up a fairly high quality set of headphones. Which would be a better investment, a portable DAC or a soundcard with a headphone amp? I do plan to use these on the go, but if the portable DACs are just crappy, I'd rather not use them and just go without a portable headphone amp, and go with the sound card. Opinions? also, these were the headphones I was planning to buy:

For something as basic as the 558, a Fiio E07K would work fine.

Thanks! Do you have any experience with the 558? I'd like to get more input before I take the plunge. I'd mostly listen to metal, use it for games, and use it for playback while recording vocals.

It will be apple lossless for on the go, and it will be WAV 1411.2 kbps lossless on the desktop. Ripped from CDs.

For Metal, Grados are always recommended. If you're going to use them for portable use too, you might not want to get open style headphones. Lots of sounds in and lots of sounds out. Both the 558 and the lower end Grados models are open. Closed headphones will offer you better performance in portable use, but they'll suffer in gaming. It's pretty hard to get something that's perfect for everything. Most people end up buying multiple headphones for this reason.

This will probably be something I do EVENTUALLY but for now, I want the emphasis to be around music, but still sound good for gaming. I can live with it being amazing for music and just provide decent gaming sound, and later on I'll get one for just gaming.
