Got the same from Comcast out here. Good thing, too, since the only other ISPs here all use verzon's DSL, which is a horrid thing that even Verizon doesn't want around.

Verizon has FiOS available across the street from me. Then they stopped expanding it, and won't expand it across the street to me. They suggested that I take their 3 Mbps DSL, though.

I'm sure there's some agreement between all the internet companies that makes it worth their while to not expand. If google fiber starts expanding into the area though you can bet that Verizon will change their mind...

Verizon is only offered in certain areas in Dallas/Fort Worth, and like you said, they have no intentions to expand... My only choices for internet where I live is AT&T DSL (which they'd try to force me to buy their U-Verse package) or Time Warner Cable (which they frequently call me about buying a cable TV/internet/Phone package, and I have to tell them no). I don't get a 3rd option (or maybe I could if I went for a business line, but I don't want to pay business rates).

Nice. I'm with a local ISP that provides fiber connections. I pay for 50/50 but actually get around 90/90. It makes me so happy.

I hope you told them where they could shove that suggestion.

The CEO who wanted Fios to exist retired and his replacements looked at their wireless plan, where they charge $15 for ever gigabyte you use past your cap. Which is 5 GB. So they stopped expanding. And then they signed a deal with cable companies to make their DSL so bad that everyone would want the cable internet, instead, while the cable companies agreed not to expand into rural areas so Verizon can force their wireless connections on them.

hughesnet and wildblue has the rural area covered... costs is about 2-3x of what a normal connection is and it is worse with a lower data allotment.

never again ><.

And apparently this is all completely legal? It seems a bit too close to price fixing to me... still, I can't wait for google fiber to expand (even though I'm sure google would find a way to monetize every action I made on the internet)...it might actually shake things up.

Anything's legal until someone takes them to court or gets them investigated.
