Installing SSD in macbook, have a few questions

#1turbovirginPosted 8/21/2013 11:28:33 AM
I'm fed up with the boot time and the time it takes to wake up from sleep. I'm eyeing the Samsung 840 series 250 GB. Currently it has 500 GB HDD.

1) Would the extra cash for the 840 pro 256 GB be worth it, in your opinion?

2) I won't require any shell to fit the drive inside the computer right? Im hoping for a simple installation

3) how do I go about reinstalling OS X? I've heard I can just clone the drive, how do I do this?

LOL @ mac

unless you're solely using it for music, photoshop, or video editing (which you're not), then don't complain about spending the extra money on an ssd..you already got ripped off from the mac to begin with

I don't think you'd notice the difference between the Samsung 840 and 840 Pro, although the Pro is often recommended over the regular 840 for various reasons, one of which is it's not much more money at all.

Look around ifixit.com. They have lots of detailed instructions about replacing Macbook hard drives and such. Be sure you know which Macbook model (what year, etc) you have.

As for cloning the drive, Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper will do the job. I believe they both have free versions that can do basic cloning. (SuperDuper definitely does)

Alternatively, you can create a bootable OS X USB drive, install SSD, boot from the USB stick, install OS X on SSD, and then copy your old files from external drive or whatever.

Nice tivor, thank you. Do you know if its possible to create a bootable DVD instead of using a thumb drive?

And yeah nazzaro, I guess I'll just go with the 840 pro.
