Was I scammed on Steam?

Last night someone sent me a message on Steam wanting to trade for some TF2 earbuds I had for any $40 game. I don't even play TF2 so I said ok. He traded me Skyrim Legendary Edition because I wanted the DLC (already had the base game). Played the game last night for a little bit and thought everything was well. I get on tonight after work and I have a ticket from Steam saying my gift has been revoked due to a problem processing the payment.

The dumb part is the game and all the DLC is still playable on my PC. The message I got from Steam support said I may "choose to delete the local content associated with this gift." Why would I do that? I'm assuming I can play just fine but will just be unable to re-download it if I uninstall?

Why even have a trading system if it can be easily exploited? Why not at least put a lock on the items until payment goes through? They took the game from me but I don't get my item back?

Is it even worth it to open a ticket? Seems like from what I've read I'm not supposed to ever trade with a stranger... I figured as long as both items were traded in a trade window, the trade was legit but I guess I might be wrong. Any feedback from anyone who has had a similar experience would be greatly appreciated.

Contact Steam Support and tell them what happened. They at least have to give you your Earbuds back.

Since you traded using Steam's trading system Valve will be on your side and recover what you lost. No worries.
