If Windows 8 is so good how come both Microsoft and Sony are using Windows 7?

Yes people use Windows 8 because it's shoved down the consumers throats and the consumers have little choice on the matter.

You've got Linux and OSX to choose from. Enjoy!

Microsoft is a monopoly because there is no close substitute to windows. That's very easy to see and understand.

OSX and Linux are not a close substitute to windows because they are totally different operating systems. Both OSes use a different kernel, different API, different source code, and they have nowhere near the support windows. If Linux had equivalent compatibility to windows, and Apple supported open hardware, MS *probably* wouldn't be considered a monopoly, because MS wouldn't be able to lock the consumer to using their OS.

And the reason for this is because of copyright/patent/trade-secret law. Because the windows os is proprietary and protected under IP, they can standardize the desktop market in their favor. You've seen it, MS makes it difficult to inter-operate with their closed file formats and network protocols. MS dismisses and tries to destroy open standard APIs such as OpenGL, ignoring web standards such as what they did with IE6. So MS is killing the competition by literally making their software incompatible with the competition. And Microsoft can get away with this because of IP law, some people have no idea how destructive Microsoft's monopoly is.

Keep in mind copyright is a government-granted monopoly, in other words a legal monopoly. So Microsoft is government created monopoly.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Government-granted_monopoly

In economics, a government-granted monopoly (also called a "de jure monopoly") is a form of coercive monopoly by which a government grants exclusive privilege to a private individual or firm to be the sole provider of a good or service.

This explains Microsoft's stranglehold in the desktop. Under IP law Microsoft is the only sole provider of windows. If you want to redistribute any of Microsoft's software or if you are a developer and you want to incorporate windows file formats into your software you have to get "license" from Microsoft.

Given that windows is the most widely used os in the world and because their software is protected under IP, MS having a monopoly was inevitable.

Well, it's any consolation, Steve Balmer is going to retire as CEO of Microsoft.

Can you elaborate on that?

I would imagine that a Microsoft monopoly simplifies things for developers. Things would get messy for both producers and consumers if everyone was using vastly different operating systems.

And Windows 8 is as "bad" as you let it. If you don't like Metro, install a start menu emulator. You can even install a completely shell altogether. Fact is, the guts of Windows 8 are solid and work very well. Nothing comes close for the end user.

To complain about superficial matters that can easily be "fixed" and overreact by going to Linux or OSX... Just nonsense. Good luck getting the same functionality with anything other than Windows. Period.

Because for Corporate/Business purposes you never run the latest and greatest technologies.

Especially if you're facing your product towards the public. You want an older more stable system, just in case. Can't stress that enough. Just in case. Windows 8 would work fine. It is essentially Windows 7. But Windows 7 has been around longer than 8, it's more stable. Why risk your system going down?

They do? Because my desktop looks like a normal PC desktop.

Unless you mean the start menu. In which case... still not really. I removed most of the default junk, and just put what I use in the front and center. As a result, I tend to click on what I most use, and for everything else, I just type what I want.

Overall I find the W8 start menu a bit better than the W7 one. Far, far easier to organize, and the search function seems to work just a bit better.
