I wonder if now is the best time to buy a new gpu

Considering the crazy price drop for 7xxxx due to the coming of 9xxx. I can't imagine a 9950 selling for under $300, which is what a new 7970 can be bought for.

you might as well buy 2x 7950 @ $200 each..if not just pay the extra big for the 9950 or 9970

The 7950 deal is pretty good, so that would be a nice thing to jump on. I'd like to see how a 9870 will look.

Once we perfect building Mechs, I expect there to be a factory in Mexico pumping out a brand call Mechsican. I wanna buy me a Mechsican.

There is always going to be something new coming out. You just have to decide if it is worth it to you, right now, or if you can settle with what you have for a while longer.

9870 will probably launch around this time next year.
If past is any indication, it'll probably perform a little bit better than 7970.

Yeah, there always are new cards coming out every six month or so. Not a new generation, though, which tends to have a bigger effect on price than most other things.

As for xfire... I hate xfire/sli. Just one of things that I'd rather not go through the effort of doing and deal with the heat / driver issues.

This, basically.

I bought a 760 last month for $250, as it was the best price/performance in my budget at that time.

If I was building my computer now, I would probably go with a 7950 and spend the $30 on a nicer case or mobo.

If I was building it a month from now it would probably be different.

I want to upgrade but I want to build a new PC even more :(

For me it's the process of picking parts, getting said parts and putting it all together.
