I'm terribly vexed. Rear USB ports don't work.

So a bit of a long story...

I built a machine for my sister about 4 months ago. A few weeks ago she tells me her rear USB ports aren't working, but the front ones are working. I trouble shoot it and couldn't figure out the issue. They weren't working in Bios either and with different mice and keyboards. I figured they went bad and got an RMA.

The replacement motherboard came today. I plugged everything in and it was all working fine, so I gave it back to her. She texts me shortly after and says they aren't working. So I go to her house to troubleshoot some more, bring my keyboard and mouse since that's what was working for me.

After talking with her, she tells me that she tried plugging in her video card to a USB port (mini HDMI plug). After trying that a bit and not getting it to work, she realized it was the wrong port and plugged it into the video card.

Could that have fried the rear USB controller? I've just never heard of anything like that before. I tried removing them and reinstalling from Device Manager, no deal. They weren't working in bios again, so I tried reloading defaults, no deal. Tried flashing the bios, no deal. Again as before, the front USB ports on the case work fine except the keyboard she was using before all this happened now doesn't work.

I've been building and troubleshooting PCs for nearly 20 years now and I've never bumped into this. I figure she messed up the USB ports by plugging in the monitor to them and then she just did the same thing again today!! What are the odds?

Anyone have some words for me to put my mind at ease? Is this even possible? Is there something I overlooked?

She's breaking them. That's the only thing that makes sense.

That's what I think. But have you ever heard, or is it possible that plugging in your monitor cable to a USB port would break all of those USB ports? Every one of them in the back doesn't work, and that was the case before as well. We figure she could have done that before since that micro HDMI cable doesn't stay very well and could have fallen out.

Maybe she tried all of the other USB ports before plugging it in to the correct port.

She's dumb, but I'm not sure she's dumb enough to try more than 2 before realizing it doesn't go in those ports.

Again though, I need to put my mind at rest. Is that even possible that it could ruin all those ports?

You only need one USB controller per x number of ports. All the ports on the back would have one controller and the front ports have another controller. Likely she's doing something to fry the controller but I don't know about jamming an HDMI cable in there. Seems pretty farfetched but I've encountered weirder stuff troubleshooting.

Your thinking is just like mine. I'm just not sure plugging in her mini HDMI cable from her monitor to a USB port would destroy the controller port. I just can't think of any other issue.

What part am I being confusing about? What can I clarify?
